Professor Chang Bing-Huang, a renowned Taiwanese calligrapher, was born in Keelung in 1949 and graduated from the private World College of Journalism and Communication. From a young age, he developed a deep interest in calligraphy and continuously refined his skills, eventually becoming an internationally acclaimed master of the art. Professor Chang hosted calligraphy programs such as “Daily Character” on Taiwan’s China Television, bringing calligraphy into countless households. Currently, he serves as a professor in the Department of Chinese Literature at Tamkang University and as the director of the Wenzhou Art Center, dedicating himself to promoting calligraphy culture and the development of digital calligraphy.
Chang Bing-Huang’s calligraphy journey began with his passion for the art. In 1981, he launched the “Daily Character” program on Taiwan’s China Television, which not only taught viewers proper writing techniques but also brought calligraphy culture into the public eye. The success of the program made Chang a household name and established his significant standing in the calligraphy world.
With the advancement of technology, Chang has continuously explored ways to integrate traditional calligraphy with modern technology. His groundbreaking innovation, the “Smart e-Pen,” is a digital pen that instantly converts the writing process into a digital format, making calligraphy creation more convenient and diverse. This technology not only preserves the essence of traditional calligraphy but also makes it easier for younger generations to access and learn the art.
Chang Bing-Huang understands that calligraphy is not just a skill but also a cultural heritage. In his teaching, he emphasizes students’ understanding of historical and cultural contexts, encouraging them to draw inspiration from classical works and blend in their own creativity. Through copying ancient inscriptions, he hopes students can master the basics and develop their personal styles on that foundation.
Additionally, Professor Chang actively participates in domestic and international calligraphy exchange activities, having held exhibitions in Japan, Southeast Asia, and other regions to promote Chinese character culture. He believes that only through exchange and collaboration can calligraphy art achieve better development and inherited.
Beyond traditional calligraphy, Chang Bing-Huang is also courageous in exploring cross-disciplinary collaborations. He has worked with multiple artists to combine calligraphy with other art forms, creating new modes of expression. For example, he integrates ink painting techniques into calligraphy, making his works more vibrant and colorful. Moreover, he actively engages in digital art creation, hoping to bring calligraphy into a broader artistic realm.
